Although not quite located in the city of Irvine, The Tustin Marketplace (located in Tustin, CA as the name implies) is an outdoor shopping center with over 120 stores and goes toe to toe with many surrounding shopping malls including The Irvine Spectrum, South Coast Plaza, Fashion Island, The District, and MainPlace Mall.
Before we get into the specifics and details, let’s first rewind a bit and provide a little background.
About Tustin Marketplace
Tustin Marketplace is owned and managed by the Irvine Company, and its history has evolved from various phases of construction throughout the years.
Since its inception in 1988 up until 2020, there have been a total of 5 phases of construction. Each one of these phases consisted of increasing the total amount of land, and with that, a greater number of establishments.
Phase 1 took place in 1988, and the latest phase, Phase 5, took place in 2015. Historically, this shows us that there will likely be additional phases, and with that, additional stores and restaurants.
Tustin Marketplace Architecture and Style
The Tustin Marketplace is a really big place. Over 165 acres to be a little more precise.
When driving down Jamboree Rd, you’ll see that you’re surrounded by their famous giant purple rectangles with colorful, neon-lit shapes resembling arrows.
In talking about shapes, the minimalistic, cube-shaped buildings and stores of the Tustin Marketplace are by no accident either. Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta had the vision in mind when designing this shopping mall to have a uniform style with a desert-like feel to it.
This mall, although not very old, continues to look amazing and maintenance is regularly done to preserve the style while keeping it modern.
During the holidays, the giant palm trees are wrapped in lights and there are other festive ornaments that are put on display.
The Irvine Company does a great job of ensuring that this outdoor mall never goes out of style.
