Pretend City Children’s Museum – Where Kids Can Get a Taste of Adulthood

The front entrance of Pretend City Children's Museum.

The Pretend City Children’s Museum in Irvine, CA is not your ordinary museum. The word museum should be used loosely here too because unlike a regular museum, you aren’t able to touch things. But this one is the exception. They promote it! Pretend City is a place where children come not only come to play around with interactive and lifelike environments but get the opportunity to pretend to be an adult.

What we mean by pretending to be an adult is that children are able to be immersed in a ‘community’ where they are able to live, work, and interact much like adults would. The over 15,000 sq. feet of space that includes these features and promotes a thought-provoking environment fit for cognitive thinking, brain growth and development, and working through things.

Some of the lifelike areas of this museum include large sandboxes for young ones to create sculptures, play kitchens complete with ovens and stoves for aspiring chefs, a gas station, a cafe, mini-mall, and even a mini supermarket that’s complete with food and check stands to replicate the real experience. Check out the other awesome exhibits that children absolutely love!

The Pretend City Children’s Museum also hosts events such as When I Grow Up Day. This is a special event that brings in paramedics, construction workers, firemen, and many other people in varying professions to the museum and they let the children get a first-hand experience at their jobs and what tools they use on a daily basis.

When you bring your child here, they’re not going to want to leave. If you don’t believe us, read some of the reviews:

  • “My kids love this place and could stay longer if they could! The concept of having a safe and open space for kids to explore is great and I wish we had something like this back at home.”
  • “My girls really enjoyed this place it’s basically a small little city with activities for the kids to do while getting stamps for doing their job and getting pretend city money at the end. My kids already asked to be back.”
  • “Such a cute little place for children to play and pretend! They have a trader joe’s for the little ones to go shopping as well as a post office, a cafe, an arts and crafts room and a theater stage for them to dress up. I love this little city and think it’s an awesome place to bring children!”

If you still need some more convincing, the museum even provides a School Readiness & Health Fair consisting of screenings and checkups, free of charge.

On top of that, they even host birthday parties to make a child’s day extra special. Is there anything this place can’t do?
